Whitewater Rafting

Yesterday, we went whitewater rafting the upper Colorado River. It was not nearly as rough as it was in Wyoming but it was still fun. The picture is prior to our trip down river. Doesn't everyone look nice and dry? It didn't look like that when we finished. First we took this dirt road in this van that felt like it was going to fall apart as we hit every rock and pothole known to man. We arrived in this, well, I don't even know what you might call it. I guess it was a camp called Del Rosa El Rio (I think) and they had this big sign as you drove down this drive into it, "We are ashamed of our government." And there were campers and trailers and kids running around barefoot and Mexican flags flying and shacks. It was bizarre at best!!! They put our raft into the river. Jack and I got into a "ducky" as they called it... a small long thin raft for two people. We took off down the river. The first part was more scenic than anything and then we hit some whitewater. It was so fun. Spencer switched with Jack and we went down the next section. Katy and Erica took two sections of whitewater and Scott and Jack finished the last section. We stopped at one point to see these small, I mean SMALL, fallen down one room cabins where the railroad men would stop and sleep. And then we found some little cabins tucked up under brush and in the side of the mountain where men would stay and hide and make moonshine. It was pretty cool to see these things still half standing. And to think they lived like that and it was so normal for them. We are so spoiled. We started to get back into the rafts and then we heard it ... the rumble of thunder. We headed again down river and then rumble, sprinkle, sprinkle, downpour! We got caught in a hard rain the rest of the way down the river!!! The kids were freezing, almost purple! We pulled out rain slickers but it was too late. We were already soaked! It was so much fun. Luckily we brought dry clothes to change into. When we got back to the condo, the boys went swimming to warm up in the hot pool and after dinner, we went down to the lake to fish and play on the playground. It was a great day! And I totally forgot to take a picture of the kids after the trip!!! DARN!
