LET THE VACATION BEGIN!!

We have not had any internet service in Maine so I (scott) am at a McDonald's about 30 mins away trying to reconnect to the world for a few minutes thi morning. THe following is a quick post Marsha put together--more to come as we re-enter the civilized world. It is a long one--covers two whole days ya know...enjoy! :)

Thursday, September 11

I never thought about the date I was flying until I actually said out loud, “I leave on 9/11.” Then it hit me. In the end, the flight was fine. Jack and Erica were great on the plane and we didn’t have any problems going through security. The only “issue” we had was when Libba and I were talking and we missed the airport exit in Orlando! Now that was funny! So there we are driving along I-4 looking in the grass trying to find a dry spot to cross over onto and wondering what we will do if we get stuck!!!! We got a good laugh about that!!!

We landed in Providence, Rhode Island and Scott and Spencer were there right on time after Scott called Gary Brickhouse to find out about our flight. The part where we landed 20 minutes early and he and Spencer were still at the mall freaked him out! But by the time we got off the empty plane (there were only 50 people on it!), and walked through the airport, there were the KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR!!! We got into Boston – wow, the traffic of it all – and checked in our hotel with our 52,398 bags. That was neat and convenient....the boys and I then proceeded directly to the indoor pool with the boys to burn off three days worth of excess energy of a car ride for Spencer. I realized we forgot Erica’s swimsuit at that point and put in the phone call to Mom! We did this while Scott was driving around the greater downtown Boston area trying to find a parking lot to pay less than $40 a day! He did and then working out paying and leaving the car all night for three days is another whole story ......

The hotel is downtown in the Seaport area of Boston. We walked by the Boston World Trade Center, saw lots of boats and ended up having dinner at this Italian restaurant where we ordered a 19” 3 lb pizza. Well, the three pounds was mostly in the crust!! We ate outside and it was beautiful and breezy and slightly cold; a nice change from Florida.

The part where our credit card was denied at the restaurant was strange. The part where we went to the 7/11 to get batteries and our other credit card account was denied was very strange. Scott called home to check our machine. Two phone calls from our bank and credit card company fraud departments were the answer. Yeah, someone in South Florida had gotten our card numbers and hit our accounts multiple times for $700, $800, $1200, etc. all afternoon. How this happened we have no idea. Did I mention we are all in one hotel room? So here we are, in Boston, with no valid cards to use and no way to get cash. We think ... we wait ... we think some more. We are all in one motel room. Luckily, I had gone back to get Erica’s card when we realized we forgot it as we sat at Dunkin Donuts with Libba. So moving money to her account was our only option. Isn’t God good? To think we had just opened her account up and began teaching her about finances and money weeks prior! The bank will send new cards to a different address and we will have to have them FEDX to us at a location. Oh wait! The renter down the street bounced his rent check, too!! Wow! We are all in one hotel room. This is AWESOME!! Thank God for friends we can call and will pray for us and listen to our antics sitting in the hall of the hotel!!!! J Well, so much for resting and settling down. I don’t think Scott slept very well that night. We went back and settled for bed. Did I mention we are all in one hotel room???!!!

Friday, September 12th

It’s a new day!!! Scott was out bright and early to check on the car and be sure it wasn’t towed. At this point, we really wouldn’t have been shocked. But I did wake up to a Dunkin Donuts coffee via a very nice husband who is trying very hard to be a in a good mood!!! We ran down and ate breakfast in order to get back at the hotel at 9:15am to catch the Trolley at 9:30am. We bought our pass for the day so we could ride all day and get on and off as we wanted. We waited downstairs ... we waited .... and waited ... 9:45am ... and waited some more ... until I went back in and asked what in the world is going on. Yeah, the guy came through at 9:10am. He was only 20 MINUTES AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!! Freak. So they had to send another trolley to get us. This is really working out so far!!!! LOL!! I mean, seriously!!!! He shows up, thank God, and we are off touring Boston by Trolley. We found really nice $5 hats. We got off and walked part of Freedom Trail and saw Paul Revere’s house. That was very cool to walk the same streets and floor boards as the men who established our country. The city is amazing and has the richest history. Even the tombstones have the neatest things on them and sayings about wives and husbands. We made our way down to Quincy Market. That was the highlight for me. I just LOVE vegetables and fruits in a market!!! We had lunch at Cheer’s and Scott got to see NORM! Well, he was a cardboard replica but none the less, it was NORM! I think it was at this point that we lost Spencer. I don’t mean literally people ... common on .... be nice!! He completely lost his personality. Up to this point, he didn’t really have one. He was being completely unruly and totally obnoxious. At this point, I think I could have been on the Jerry Springer show. We were all completely over his attitude. The three days of driving and being up late had done him in and he had 0 self-control. I’m just keeping it real. And then I think Scott and I were at our limits as well. We jumped back on the trolley to get some space and rode the rest of Boston and took in the history and scenery. We did get off at the park and saw the ducks and swans and how could anyone pass up a place called Daddy’s Fried Dough? Are you serious??? We HAD to try it ..... we saw the state buildings, the Shaw statue, George Washington statue, Fenway Park, China Town, beautiful bridges, antique district, etc. It was amazing!!! Scott and I said this is definitely a place to come back to for a long weekend and take in the shopping and restaurants. We ended up back at the hotel around 4pm, the boys swam again and we headed to dinner. I wish I could tell you the name of it but it was the No Name Restaurant. It was a complete and total dive and it was awesome!! We had the best fish and chips ever! And people were getting huge lobsters on plates and there was a lot of cracking going on!! And lots of plastic bibs, too!
